RADON / PLANTS

Does RADON affect PLANTS?

Early studies at the Brookhaven National Laboratory found that spiderwort plants showed no effects when irradiated at 0.15 Gy per day for 12 weeks and mild effects at 0.2 Gy per day for 12 weeks (Casarett 1968). More generally, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA 1992) judged that 0.1 Gy per day or less were very unlikely to produce persistent, measurable deleterious changes in populations or communities of terrestrial plants.

PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

Radon is a radioactive element. A radioactive element is one that gives off radiation and breaks down to form a different element. Radon is formed when heavier radioactive elements, like uranium and thorium, break down. In turn, radon breaks down to form lighter elements, such as lead and bismuth.
